Product Design @ Abnormal
Flexibility, Agility, and Customer-Centricity:
My Experience in a Rapidly Growing Cybersecurity Startup
I joined Abnormal Security as the second designer. During my time there, I have gained valuable insights, including:

My projects have ranged from internal to external, and have included improvements to 0-1 projects. I have driven user research projects and established templates and best practices for our team, including PM/Design collaboration, user research, and design hiring practices.

What do I do here?

01

Designing across the board

I have designed for almost every product area, from helping our users search for emails across their entire environment, to redesigning navigation, to building design visions for new products like security awareness training and security posture management from the ground up.

02

Building a design system

When I joined, our organization did not have a design system. Together with another designer, we built a design system from the ground up. It now includes over 87 unique components and serves the entire core front-end and design team.

03

Thoroughly understand users

For every project, I made sure to gain a deep understanding of our users and their interests, issues, and edge cases. To achieve this, I conducted direct user research, often with the help of our PM to establish a research plan, conducted research, and synthesized the results.

I also greatly valued the insights our Customer Success representatives provided. They worked very closely with our customers and were often privy to issues that no one else knew. By talking to them, I gained a better understanding of our customers' needs and could ensure that our products met those needs.

04

Establishishing team processes

I defined frameworks for running critiques, hiring practices, assessing candidates during interviews, retrospectives, and setting up fun-time for team morale.

Teammates make the world go round

Our compact but lovely team of 3. We all have our own specialties, and I've learned so much from both of them.

And just to brag a bit...

Some kind words by lovely people.
